Paver, Block and Kerbstone Molds: Quality Starts with the Tooling

The mold defines the product that the customer sees. Machine pressure, vibration and concrete quality are important, but an inaccurate or worn mold will still produce inconsistent dimensions, damaged edges and poor fitting between pavers.

Mold selection should begin with an approved product drawing. State the finished length, width, height or thickness, chamfer, surface pattern, number of cavities and any logo. Do not order a mold from a product name alone because terms such as “I-shape,” “zigzag” or “kerbstone” can refer to different dimensions.

Machine compatibility

The mold and tamper head must match the machine frame, pallet size, feed box, product height adjustment and vibration arrangement. A mold made for another machine may appear similar but fail to align correctly.

Confirm:

Machine model and serial or approved interface dimensions

Production pallet length, width and thickness

      Maximum mold envelope

      Mounting-hole locations

      Tamper connection

      Feed-box clearance

      Product height range

Cavities and production rate

More cavities can increase pieces per cycle, but the mold must still fill evenly and remain structurally stiff. Narrow sections may require careful aggregate grading. Large products can require fewer cavities and a longer feed or vibration time.

Production estimates should state pieces per cycle and practical cycles per hour. A paver output figure cannot be directly applied to a hollow block or kerbstone mold.

Steel, machining and wear

Mold walls and wear areas operate under abrasive concrete and repeated vibration. Material grade, heat treatment and replaceable wear components should be agreed in the specification where required. Precision machining helps maintain cavity size and tamper clearance.

Inspect welds, corners, cavity alignment and flatness before use. During production, watch for widening joints, cracked welds, rounded edges and uneven product height.

Custom designs and branding

Custom molds can produce local market sizes, tactile pavers, decorative patterns or a customer mark. The buyer should approve a drawing or sample before fabrication. Complex shapes should also be checked for easy demolding and adequate concrete flow.

Review the KM design range to discuss available profiles. A conceptual image is useful for selection, but the fabrication approval should use dimensioned drawings.

Mold changeover

Plan safe lifting points and storage racks. Molds are heavy and should not be moved by workers using improvised hooks. Clean the machine seating surfaces before installation and verify tamper alignment at low speed or manual mode.

Record machine settings for each mold, including feed time, vibration, hydraulic pressure, product height and mix moisture. This makes future changeovers faster and reduces rejected pallets.

Maintenance and storage

Clean concrete before it hardens. Avoid striking precision edges. Apply suitable rust protection for long storage and support the mold so it does not distort. Keep the tamper and mold as a matched set.
