Cement Screw Conveyor Selection for Silos and Batching Plants

A cement screw conveyor transfers powder from the silo outlet to a cement weigh hopper or mixer. It looks simple, but incorrect diameter, length, angle or drive selection can reduce output, overload the motor and interrupt the entire batching cycle.

The screw should be selected as part of the cement system, with the silo outlet, gate, receiving point and control sequence considered together. A quotation based only on length can miss important operating details.

Information needed for selection

Provide the required cement delivery rate, total center-to-center length, incline angle, inlet height, discharge height, available voltage, start frequency and expected operating hours. Also confirm whether the screw will feed a weigh hopper intermittently or run for longer continuous periods.

A reference industrial requirement may use a 10-inch-diameter screw around 40 feet long with a 15 kW motor, but this is not a universal specification. Steeper angles, different pitch, cement behavior and desired capacity change the required design.

Trough, tube and flighting

Many cement screws use a steel tube with helical flighting fixed to a central pipe. Flight pitch and clearance influence capacity and power. The assembly must remain straight and properly supported to prevent the rotating screw from rubbing the casing.

Long conveyors may require intermediate hanger bearings. These bearings work in dusty conditions and need correct alignment, material selection and maintenance. Poor alignment increases heat, noise and power consumption.

Drive and gearbox

The motor and gearbox should provide sufficient torque for starting under realistic conditions. Starting a fully loaded screw is more demanding than running an empty one. Electrical protection should respond to overload without nuisance tripping during normal starts.

Confirm:

Motor power, voltage, phase and frequency

      Gearbox ratio and output speed

      Coupling and shaft arrangement

      Backstop requirement for inclined installation

      Overload protection

      Rotation direction

      Guarding around moving parts

Inlet, outlet and gate control

The silo gate should isolate cement before screw maintenance. The inlet must not create a dead pocket where cement hardens. The discharge should enter the weigh hopper without leakage or excessive dust.

Flexible connections can reduce the transfer of vibration, but they must be suitable for cement powder and supported so they do not carry structural loads. Level switches or weighing logic should stop the screw at the correct target.

Installation angle and capacity

As the screw angle increases, effective conveying capacity normally decreases and power demand can rise. Do not assume that a horizontal capacity chart applies to a steep installation. The supplier should calculate or select the conveyor for the actual geometry.

Allow removal space at one end. A screw that is installed tightly between structures may be difficult to dismantle for flight, bearing or seal replacement.

Maintenance

Inspect gearbox oil, bearings, seals, flange bolts, guards and motor current. Unusual noise or rising current can indicate buildup, alignment problems or bearing failure. Keep rainwater away from the outlet; moisture causes cement to set inside the tube.

The screw should be interlocked with the silo gate and receiving equipment. Never open inspection covers or remove guards while the system is energized. Lockout and verify isolation before work.

KM MUGHAL 3 STAR can coordinate the screw with the cement silo and batching plant so heights, capacities and controls match.
