Hollow and Solid Concrete Block Production: Machine Selection Guide
Hollow and solid concrete blocks serve different construction needs. Hollow blocks reduce unit weight and can provide space for reinforcement or services, while solid blocks offer greater mass for selected applications. The machine and mold must be chosen from the required finished block, not from a general capacity claim.
Start by confirming the local or project dimension. Blocks
described as 4-inch, 6-inch or 8-inch can have different actual lengths, heights,
wall thicknesses and hollow percentages.
Mold
design
The mold controls block dimensions, cavities, webs and
cores. Core components must remain aligned under vibration and pressure. Thin
webs require a mix that flows into narrow areas without becoming too wet.
Approve a dimensioned drawing showing:

Overall length, width and height

Number and shape of hollows
•
Face-shell and web thickness
•
Cavities per machine cycle
•
Chamfers or grooves
•
Pallet arrangement
Machine
capacity
Larger blocks place fewer pieces on one pallet and consume
more concrete per cycle. Compare machines using blocks per cycle, practical
cycle time and shift hours. Include downtime for cleaning, mold changes and
maintenance.

Concrete
mix
Block concrete must compact around cores and form stable
edges immediately after demolding. Aggregate grading, cement dosage and
moisture are essential. Oversized stone can block narrow webs; excessive fines
can increase cement and water demand.
Prepare weighed batches and record moisture adjustments.
Check fresh block weight as a quick production-control indicator, then verify
strength and absorption through proper testing.
Vibration
and hydraulic settings
Feed time should distribute concrete evenly. Vibration helps
fill the mold and hydraulic or mechanical compaction controls height. Too much
vibration may cause segregation; too little leaves voids and weak corners.
Document settings for every block mold. If one cavity
repeatedly produces a lighter block, inspect material distribution, mold wear
and pallet support.
Pallets
and curing
Blocks need flat, stiff pallets during demolding and early
movement. A warped pallet can change height or crack the product. Move green
blocks smoothly and keep them protected from rapid drying.
Curing should retain moisture long enough for strength
development. The method may use water, covers, enclosed curing or another
controlled process based on the factory and climate.
Market
and costing
Identify whether customers buy by piece, truckload or
project quantity. Costing should include concrete, electricity, labor, pallets,
mold wear, curing, loading, transport, breakage and testing. Heavier solid
blocks can have significant transport cost.
Quality
documentation
Keep batch dates, product dimensions, weights and test
results. For project supply, confirm the applicable standard before production.
A clear quality record helps resolve customer questions and supports repeat
